Featherston is the gateway to the Wairarapa. We are only 60 minutes drive from Wellington.
Featherston is a good base to explore some of the district's attractions or needing a quiet place to stay when attending family or friends functions. We are a 10 minute walk to one of the best wedding venues (Tarureka Estate) and 5 minutes drive to Tauherenikau Race course.
Our town is close to the wetlands of Wairarapa. Watch for rare and migrating birds in this important wetland habitat. Right in the centre of the town are two museums that have no counterparts anywhere else in the country.
The Fell Engine Museum houses the only Fell engine in the world, the sole survivor of the rolling stock of the Rimutaka Incline, which was the only rail route into Wairarapa until 1955.
Find exhibitions exploring lives of early settlers, through to aspects of World Wars I and II at the neighbouring Featherston Heritage Complex.
We are only a 5 minute drive to one of the most beautiful river spots in NZ. Enjoy the picturesque campsite above the Tauherenikau River amongst regenerating bush, take in a walk along the Tauherenikau Gorge track or cool off with a swim in one of NZ's cleanest river spots.
Lake Domain (picnic area and toilets) is around 8 km from Featherston. The Wairarapa Lake Shore Scenic Reserve (parking and picnic area) is around 16 km from Featherston. Excellent for canoeing, boating, yachting, fishing, duck shooting and walking.
If you enjoy Mountain biking or just an amble around our rural country side we have it all.
The Rimutaka Cycle Trail is a must for those who enjoy cycling. A great option is to stay with us 2 nights, catching the train in the morning from Featherston with bikes on tow to Maymorn Station and riding back over the trail to Featherston. The Rimutaka Rail Trail, runs along the old railway line from Maymorn to Cross Creek, then along Western Lake Road down to the Department of Conservation campsite at Corner Creek, with the only on-road portion of the trail passing through the stunning open expanses of the Wairarapa Valley to Featherston.
We are only 10 minutes drive to Greytown with its boutique shopping and 10 minutes drive to Martinborough's wineries.
